Taking the Structure Out of Play: A Brief Reminder for Parents

Parents and caregivers often think that every play-based interaction with their child needs to be highly structured in order to target skills; but, spontaneity during play often lends itself to unexpected learning opportunities. Open-ended, child-centered and directed play still provides multiple opportunities to target speech and language skills. Learning through play does not have to be structured and adult-centered.
