The 3R’s of Learning

Research indicates that three important systems shape young children's development and early learning. According to the University of Florida’s Center for Excellent in Early Childhood Studies, these systems, known as the “3R's of Early Learning” are Relationships, Repetition, and Routines. These systems are salient because they focus on the ways in which children learn, as well as what they learn.

  1. relationships

when children have nurturing and responsive interactions with others, they are experiencing relationships that support their brain development and learning

  2. repetition

repeated learning opportunities embedded within daily routines help build connections in a child’s brain that promote development and learning

  3. routines

daily routines and activities provide opportunities for children to practice and learn skills in meaningful contexts
